In the spring of 1886, a small band of Christians united to form what was then known as the Montvale Baptist Church. The folks of Montvale soon discovered that there were two communities in Texas named Montvale. After discussions among the citizens, the name of the community was changed to Lometa, which means "Little Mountain." After the United States Post Office approved the name change, Lometa First Baptist Church was born, usually meeting in the school buildings of country schools in the area.
In 1901, the church began construction on its first building-a small, wooden frame sanctuary. By this time church membership had increased to about seventy souls. It took several years to raise enough funds to complete the building project, but the building was finally finished, paid off, and dedicated in April of 1905.
Sacrificial giving has long been a tradition at FBC Lometa. As early as 1907 considerable sums of money were being given to state and foreign mission works. Buckner Children's Home was also included in the sacrificial giving. The fellowship proved that its devotion to the Lord included a realization of the Kingdom work outside of the local community.
Electric lights were added to the building in 1909, and church membership grew to over one hundred twenty believers.
In 1922, Miss Minnie Alexander was commissioned by the church to go to China as missionary in service from First Baptist Church Lometa.
A new building was started in 1950, and church growth reached an all time high of three hundred fifty.
As the years passed, membership fluctuated due largely to the decline of the population of Lometa. Now we are a small group of believers trying to carry out the Great Commission of our Lord. Missions remain an important part of our fellowship as we try to reach out to the poor and hurting in our local community.
Information is from church minutes and a history compiled for the 100th year anniversary celebration in 1986.

"Lometa First Baptist Church hosts the Capital Area Food Bank truck the third Wednesday of every month. Without their generous outreach through this program, my family would often go hungry. I am grateful to the church for the hours their members give in this effort."
